Guide
Which Certification Should You Start With?
A lot of people get stuck when deciding which certification to start with.
You have decided to learn something new in IT. That is a great step. But then you look at all the different certifications. Suddenly there are just too many options.
You see AZ-900, AZ-104, SAA-C03, AI-900, and Security+. And it feels like picking the wrong one will completely slow you down.
Here is the reality. Your first certification does not need to be perfect. It just needs to get you moving.
Step 1: Start With Your Direction
Before you pick a specific exam, think about what you actually want to do. Do not worry about a ten year plan. Just think about the next few months.
- If you are interested in cloud, start with cloud basics.
- If you are interested in artificial intelligence, start with AI fundamentals.
- If you are interested in security, start with security basics.
You do not need your entire career figured out today. You just need a general direction.
Step 2: If You Are Completely New
If you are starting from absolute zero, fundamental exams help a lot. Some people say they are a waste of time. They are wrong.
Good starting points are the AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals, the AWS Cloud Practitioner, or the AI-900 Azure AI Fundamentals.
These exams help you understand the terminology. You get comfortable with the core concepts. And you build your confidence. You will not become an expert by passing these. That is not the goal. You are simply building a base.
Step 3: What Comes After That
Once those fundamental concepts make sense, you can move one level deeper. This is where things become highly practical.
- For Azure, you move to AZ-104 Azure Administrator.
- For AWS, you move to SAA-C03 Solutions Architect.
- For AI, you move to AI-102 Azure AI Engineer.
- For Security, you move to CompTIA Security+.
This is the stage where you start seeing how all the different services actually work together in the real world.
Step 4: A Simple Way to Decide
If you just want a clear starting point right now, use this guide.
- If you are completely new, choose AZ-900 or AWS Cloud Practitioner.
- If you know you want to work in Azure, start with AZ-900 and move to AZ-104.
- If you know you want to work in AWS, start with Cloud Practitioner and move to SAA-C03.
- If you want to build AI tools, start with AI-900 and move to AI-102.
- If you want to work in security, start with Security+.
And if you are still completely unsure? Just start with a cloud fundamental exam like AZ-900. It gives you a little bit of everything.
Step 5: Mistakes People Make All the Time
Here are a few things that will slow down your progress.
- Starting with an advanced architect certification way too early.
- Collecting ten basic certifications without building any real understanding.
- Skipping fundamentals because they seem too simple.
- Spending weeks comparing certifications instead of just opening a book and studying.
You do not need the perfect plan. You just need momentum.
Step 6: How to Use Practice Properly
This part matters more than the actual certification. Do not wait until the week before your exam to test yourself. You need to test your knowledge as you go.
Learn a topic. Take a short quiz. See what you got wrong. Then go back and study those weak areas.
This is where you can check out ExamOS. They have a daily 30 minute practice quiz that is perfect for this. Start with the Rookie mode to get used to the basic terminology. When you feel good about that, move to Challenger to test your deeper understanding. And once you think you are ready to book the real exam, attempt the Legend mode.
Testing yourself early and often is how you actually learn this material. It keeps you honest about what you know.
Final Advice
Your first certification is literally just a starting point.
It provides structure for your learning. It builds your confidence. It helps you move forward. After you pass your first exam, you will have a much clearer idea of what you want to do next.
