How to Actually Study for IT Certifications
A lot of people struggle with IT certifications. Not because the actual technology is too hard. They struggle because they do not have a clear way to study.
They watch hours of video. They take pages of notes. They read documentation. But when they try to answer a scenario question, the information just does not stick.
So here is how you fix that.
Step 1: Do Not Try to Learn Everything at Once
This is the first big mistake. You do not need to understand every single detail before you move forward.
Focus on small pieces. Pick one topic. Learn one concept. Build one service. Get a basic understanding and then move on to the next thing. You can always come back and learn the advanced features later.
Step 2: Make It Practical Early
Here is the thing. If you only watch video courses, it feels like you understand the material. But that understanding is very shallow.
As soon as possible, you need to open up the Azure portal or the AWS console. Try building things yourself. Follow simple examples. Create a virtual network. Delete it and create it again. It does not need to be complex. Just getting your hands on the keyboard makes a massive difference.
Step 3: Test Yourself Sooner Than You Think
Most people leave practice tests for the final week before their exam. That is way too late.
You need to start testing yourself early. After you finish learning a topic, take a short quiz. See exactly what you got wrong and figure out why.
This is where you can use ExamOS. They have a daily 30 minute practice quiz. Start with the Rookie mode right after you watch a video. It will test if you actually remember the basic terms and concepts.
Step 4: Use a Simple Study Loop
You do not need a complicated, color coded study schedule. You just need a simple loop.
Learn a topic. Practice building it. Test your knowledge. Fix what you got wrong. Then repeat the process.
Keep this loop small and do it consistently.
Step 5: Pay Attention to Your Weak Areas
It is very easy to keep reviewing things you already understand. It makes you feel smart. But it does not help you pass the exam.
You need to focus on the topics you get wrong. Look for the concepts you cannot explain to a friend. Pay attention to the areas where you hesitate.
When you use the Challenger mode on ExamOS, it will quickly expose these weak spots. It shows you exactly where you need to spend your daily study time.
Step 6: Keep Your Study Sessions Manageable
You do not need to study for eight hours a day. In fact, that almost never works.
A realistic goal is about two hours a day. Keep a consistent schedule. Maybe one hour before work and one hour in the evening. That is enough for most certifications if you stay consistent over a few months.
Step 7: Do Not Rush the Exam
Another common mistake is rushing to book the exam before you are actually ready. People try to sprint through the syllabus.
Instead, look for these signals. You are ready when you can explain concepts in your own words. You are ready when you feel comfortable looking at a complex architecture diagram. And you are ready when you can consistently pass the Legend mode on ExamOS. That is a much better way to know you are prepared.
Mistakes People Make All the Time
Here are a few bad habits that will completely ruin your progress.
- Watching too many videos without ever building anything.
- Taking beautiful notes but never testing your actual understanding.
- Waiting until the very end of your study plan to take a practice exam.
- Trying to memorize answers instead of understanding how the technology works.
If you avoid these, you are already ahead of most people.
Final Advice
Keep things incredibly simple. Do not try to be perfect. Do not try to rush.
If you show up regularly, practice building things, and test yourself honestly, you will easily get there.
