FAQ
The AI-500 certification validates your ability to design, build, and optimize scalable, production-ready multi-agent AI systems and workflows. This expert-level certification targets senior AI engineers, solution architects, and technical leads who manage the full development lifecycle from design to production.
You'll demonstrate skills in architecting multi-agent solutions, developing them in Azure with Microsoft Foundry, evaluating and monitoring for reliability, and securing, governing, and deploying at scale. You should be proficient in Python, familiar with Azure compute, network, storage, and data services, and experienced with open-source frameworks and standards including Microsoft Agent Framework, MCP, RAG, and LangGraph. As organizations adopt agentic AI systems, professionals who can design and operate multi-agent solutions in production are in high demand.
Exam details: 40–60 questions, 100 minutes of testing time, passing score of 700 out of 1000, and a registration fee of $83 USD during beta (standard pricing expected to rise after general availability). The certification is valid for 12 months and renews free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

| Domain | Weight | What This Means |
|---|---|---|
| Architect multi-agent solutions | 15–20% | Decompose goals into workflows, agents, and tools. Design agent personas, scopes, boundaries, and autonomy levels. Specify tool scopes, permission boundaries, and communication protocols. Design short-term and long-term memory architectures. |
| Develop multi-agent solutions in Azure | 30–35% | Implement advanced prompt engineering, context management, multi-agent RAG, tool ecosystems, MCP servers, and orchestration patterns (hub-and-spoke, sequential, parallel, peer-to-peer). Build human-in-the-loop processes, caching strategies, and scaling controls. |
| Evaluate, optimize, and monitor multi-agent solutions | 20–25% | Design human review and automated evaluations for memory, knowledge, tools, and prompts. Diagnose context window failures (sliding-window amnesia, summary drift, vector-only recall, entity continuity). Implement tracing, cost monitoring, and continuous improvement loops. |
| Secure, govern, and deploy multi-agent solutions | 20–25% | Implement identity-based access, authentication flows (user impersonation, on-behalf-of, OAuth 2.0), secrets management with Key Vault, shift-left security with AI Red Teaming Agent, multi-intervention guardrails, and release strategies (DTAP, blue/green, canary). |
Develop multi-agent solutions in Azure is the dominant domain at 30–35%. You cannot pass the exam on architectural design alone. Nearly a third of your score depends on implementation skills in Microsoft Foundry, the Agent Framework, MCP, and RAG.

The AI-500 exam consists of 40 to 60 questions with 100 minutes of testing time. The total appointment time is typically 120 to 130 minutes, including time for the NDA and exam setup. Question formats include multiple-choice, multiple-response, case studies, and potentially labs. The exam is currently in beta, and Microsoft has not published a fixed question count or duration on the official exam page as of October 2026. Beta exams are not scored immediately; Microsoft collects question quality data before finalizing results.
The passing score is 700 out of 1000 for the standard exam. During the beta period, the cost is $83 USD, with regional pricing variations. Once the exam reaches general availability, the price is expected to rise to $165 USD. The certification is valid for one year and renews free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
The exam covers four domains:
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Architect multi-agent solutions | 15–20% |
| Develop multi-agent solutions in Azure | 30–35% |
| Evaluate, optimize, and monitor multi-agent solutions | 20–25% |
| Secure, govern, and deploy multi-agent solutions | 20–25% |
Domain 2 is the largest and covers prompt engineering, context management, RAG, MCP servers, orchestration patterns, caching, and the Microsoft Agent Framework. Domains 1, 3, and 4 together account for 65–70% of the exam.
AI-500 is an Expert-level exam designed for professionals who design, build, and optimize scalable, production-ready multi-agent AI systems and workflows. Candidates should have experience developing AI and ML solutions, deploying agent systems in production, and orchestrating agent logic using Microsoft Foundry. Proficiency in Python is expected, along with familiarity with Azure compute, networking, storage, and data services. The AI-103 certification is a prerequisite for the certification, though not for sitting the exam. Familiarity with Microsoft Agent Framework, MCP, RAG, and LangGraph is also recommended.
AI-500 validates expertise in designing and implementing production-ready multi-agent AI solutions. It qualifies you for roles such as Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert, AI Architect, and Senior AI Engineer. As organizations adopt agentic AI systems, certification in Microsoft Foundry positions you for early adopter engineering teams.
After earning the Expert-level multi-agent credential, you can deepen your specialization with:
| Certification | Exam Code | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate | AI-200 | Back-end services, scalable architectures, full AI development lifecycle |
| MLOps Engineer Associate | AI-300 | Operationalizing ML and GenAI solutions |
| Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate | SC-500 | Securing AI workloads and cloud infrastructure |
ExamOS provides Mock Exams and practice modes for these paths to help you transition your skills across the Azure AI stack.
