The exam consists of 50–60 questions, including both multiple-choice and multiple-select formats. You are allotted 120 minutes (2 hours) to complete the assessment. The exam is conducted in a proctored environment and can be taken either online or at a physical testing center.
Google Cloud does not publish a specific numerical passing score or a percentage of correct answers required. Upon completion, you will receive a diagnostic result of "Pass" or "Fail." Google uses scaled scoring to maintain consistency across different exam versions. The Associate Cloud Engineer certification is valid for two years. To maintain your certified status, you must recertify by passing the latest version of the exam during the recertification window, which begins 60 days before your current certificate expires. (Note: Google recently standardized this to two years for all Associate and Professional certifications).
There are no formal prerequisites to sit for the ACE exam. The target audience includes Cloud Administrators, DevOps Engineers, and System Administrators. Google recommends that candidates have at least six months of hands-on experience with the Google Cloud Console and the gcloud command-line interface before attempting the exam.
The ACE is one of the most respected associate-level certifications because it proves you can actually build and manage resources. It qualifies you for roles such as Junior Cloud Engineer, Cloud Administrator, or Site Reliability Engineer (SRE). While it is a strong technical validator, you will still need to demonstrate your ability to write scripts (Python/Bash) and manage Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) to be competitive for high-salary positions.
