Overview
The AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional (DOP-C02) certification is designed for experienced professionals who automate infrastructure, manage deployments, and maintain reliable systems on AWS. It focuses on continuous integration and delivery, monitoring, logging, and infrastructure automation. The exam covers services such as CloudFormation, CodePipeline, CodeBuild, and CloudWatch, along with best practices for designing resilient and scalable systems. Candidates are expected to understand how to implement deployment strategies, manage system failures, and optimize performance. A key aspect of this certification is the ability to automate processes and reduce manual intervention in production systems. You will encounter scenarios that require balancing reliability, cost, and operational complexity. This certification is particularly relevant for DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, and platform engineers working in AWS environments. As organizations continue to adopt automation and cloud-native practices, professionals with strong DevOps skills remain in high demand. DOP-C02 is considered one of the more challenging AWS certifications due to its depth and focus on real-world operational scenarios.
FAQ
The AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02) is intended for individuals who have two or more years of experience provisioning, operating, and managing AWS environments. It validates a candidate’s ability to automate the testing and deployment of AWS infrastructure and applications. While there are no formal prerequisites (you do not need an Associate-level cert first), AWS strongly recommends having a deep understanding of at least one high-level programming language and a firm grasp of modern development processes and methodologies.
The DOP-C02 is a comprehensive exam consisting of 75 questions that must be completed within 180 minutes. The questions are either multiple-choice (one correct answer) or multiple-response (two or more correct answers). Because this is a Professional-level exam, the questions are often lengthy, scenario-based narratives that require you to synthesize multiple AWS services into a single, automated solution. Time management is critical, as you have roughly 2.4 minutes per question.
The exam is divided into six domains that reflect the lifecycle of a DevOps environment:
No. All AWS certification exams are strictly closed-book. You are not permitted to access AWS documentation, the AWS Management Console, or any external notes. Unlike Microsoft Associate/Expert exams, you must rely entirely on your memory for CLI syntax, service limits, and integration details. You will be provided with a digital notepad or physical scratch paper for diagramming complex architectures, but all technical knowledge must be pre-learned.
The exam is scored on a scale of 100 to 1,000, and a minimum scaled score of 750 is required to pass. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers, so it is in your best interest to answer every question. To prepare for the high level of architectural complexity, ExamOS offers scenario-based practice quizzes that build real exam confidence by mimicking the multi-step troubleshooting logic required at the Professional level.
The registration fee is $300 USD. However, if you have passed an AWS certification previously (like the Developer or SysOps Associate), you will have a 50% discount voucher waiting in the "Benefits" section of your AWS Certification Account. Using this voucher reduces the cost to $150 USD.
If you do not pass the DOP-C02 on your first attempt, you must wait 14 calendar days before you are eligible to retake it. You can take the exam as many times as you like, but you must pay the full registration fee (or use a voucher) for every attempt. You cannot retake the exam if you have already passed it and your certification is still active.
The certification is valid for three years. To maintain your status, you must go through the recertification process, which involves:
The DOP-C02 is one of the most respected and high-paying certifications in the industry. It qualifies you for senior roles such as Senior DevOps Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), and Platform Engineer. Because the exam proves you can manage complex, distributed systems at scale, it is a significant differentiator for lead positions in companies that prioritize automation and CI/CD maturity.
Once you have mastered AWS DevOps at a professional level, you can choose to broaden your architectural scope or deepen your security/networking expertise:
