You're halfway through a study plan built around a five-section blueprint. You've memorized IAM basics, VPC fundamentals, and deployment workflows. Then you check Google's official exam page and realize the exam guide has a new date, new product names, and content about tooling that didn't exist when your study plan was written.

This happened on June 30, 2026, when Google refreshed the Associate Cloud Engineer exam guide. Three months earlier, on March 2, 2026, Google had already moved every certification exam from Kryterion to Pearson VUE. Together, these changes mean that study plans written before mid-2026 are preparing candidates for an exam that no longer exists.

The ACE exam didn't just get a content update. It got restructured, rebranded, and delivered on a new testing platform. If your study materials reference a Kryterion proctor or old Vertex AI product names, you're studying for the wrong version.

What the Exam Looks Like Right Now

Google recommends at least six months of hands-on experience with Google Cloud before sitting the exam. That recommendation carries real weight here. The ACE is a practical exam, and candidates who have only watched videos tend to fail it.

One detail that catches people off guard: Google does not publish a passing score. Any source quoting a specific percentage is guessing. Plan to be comfortably competent across all five sections rather than aiming at an imaginary threshold.

The Five Exam Sections

The exam retained its five-section structure, but the weightings and content within them shifted. Here are the current weightings:

Deploying and implementing is the single largest section at roughly 25% of the exam. Operations and setup account for another 40% combined. If your study plan is mostly reading documentation, you've misallocated your time. You need to be deploying things, breaking them, and fixing them.

The official exam guide describes the ACE as someone who "deploys and secures applications, services, and infrastructure, monitors the operations of multiple projects, and maintains enterprise solutions to meet target performance metrics." Notice what's missing from that description: there's no mention of designing architectures. The ACE is an operator's exam, not an architect's.

What's New in the June 2026 Content

The refreshed exam guide is more AI-aware than its predecessor. Several objectives now name tooling that wasn't examinable before.

AI and Agent Tooling

This is the category with the most new material:

  • Gemini Cloud Assist — for analysing resources and providing AI-powered recommendations, alongside Cloud Asset Inventory
  • Gemini CLI, Google Antigravity, and Application Design Center — AI-assisted planning and implementation tooling
  • Agent Runtime on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform — formerly Vertex AI Agent Engine
  • Deciding between GPUs and TPUs for a workload, and attaching them

If you haven't worked with Gemini Cloud Assist or Agent Runtime, these aren't topics you can bluff through. The exam tests whether you know how these tools function in a deployment workflow, not just that they exist.

New and Expanded Infrastructure Products

Several products that were too new or niche for the previous exam are now explicitly in scope:

  • AlloyDB — PostgreSQL-compatible database service
  • Google Cloud Hyperdisk — high-performance block storage
  • Managed Lustre — high-performance file storage for AI/HPC workloads
  • NetApp Volumes — enterprise file storage
  • Managed Service for Apache Kafka — managed Kafka on Google Cloud
  • Database Center — for managing a Google Cloud database fleet
  • Workforce Identity Federation — external identity integration
  • Cloud Next Generation Firewall (Cloud NGFW) policies

You don't need deep expertise in all of these, but you need to know what they are, when you'd use them, and how they fit into a deployment. The exam tests judgment, not memorization.

The Rebranding Trap

Several products were rebranded between the old and new exam guides. The most notable:

  • Vertex AI Agent Engine is now Agent Runtime on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. This rebranding happened in April 2026, and the June 30 refresh aligned the exam guide with it.

If you're using older training materials, you'll encounter the old names. When you see them, cross-reference against the current exam guide. Studying the wrong product name won't just confuse you. It could lead you to study the wrong service entirely.

The Pearson VUE Switch

Google replaced Kryterion with Pearson VUE on March 2, 2026. The exam length, question count, and format are unchanged, but everything about the testing experience is different.

What changed:

  • Booking journey — you schedule through Pearson's system, not Kryterion's
  • Online proctoring software — Pearson uses OnVUE, which has its own system requirements and room scan procedures

If you've recently sat a CompTIA, Microsoft, or ISC2 exam, the Pearson OnVUE experience will already be familiar. If you haven't, run the OnVUE system test on the exact machine and network you plan to use for the exam. Not a different laptop, not a different room. Proctoring failures on exam day are almost always preventable with a 10-minute system check the week before.

A Third Renewal Path

Beyond the standard exam and the shorter renewal exam, Google added a third renewal route in July 2026. You can now renew your ACE certification by completing designated courses or skill badges in Google Skills.

How it works:

  • Create or log into a Google Skills account
  • Link your CM Connect and Google Skills accounts using the same email
  • Eligible certifications and renewal learning paths will appear on your Google Skills dashboard

What This Means for Your Study Plan

If you're starting fresh or restarting after the June 2026 update, here's how to think about it:

Your first week should be reading the current exam guide end-to-end. The official guide from Google lists every topic that may appear on the exam. Compare it against whatever study materials you're using. If your materials don't cover Gemini Cloud Assist, Agent Runtime, or the new storage products, they're incomplete.

Sections 3 and 4 deserve the most study time. Deploying and implementing is 25% of the exam, and operations is 20%. That's nearly half the exam. Deploying compute, managing GKE, configuring storage, setting up monitoring. These are the tasks that fill most of the exam. Lab time counts more than reading time here.

Don't skip the AI tooling. In previous versions, you could safely deprioritize AI-related topics because they were a small fraction of the exam. That's no longer the case. Gemini Cloud Assist, Gemini CLI, and Agent Runtime are now integrated into the planning, deployment, and operations sections.

Use Google's own learning path. Google publishes a Cloud Engineer learning path designed specifically for this exam. Where Practice Fits In

Reading about deployment workflows and actually making decisions under pressure are different skills. The ACE exam tests the latter.
